How to find US employers open to visa holders

Sponsor lists show who filed in the past. The J-1 sponsor directory, USCIS and Department of Labor data and the posting itself each answer a different question. Here is what each can and cannot say.

Lists of “companies that sponsor visas” rank employers by petitions filed in past years. That answers a real question, but not the one you have on a Tuesday night: does this employer, for this role, open the door to someone who needs a visa?

Name the visa first

A J-1 intern goes through a designated sponsor: programme acceptance, then Form DS-2019, plus a DS-7002 placement plan. An H-1B runs on an employer’s petition. A list of H-1B filers tells a J-1 intern very little.

What each source answers

Directory addresses are sponsor offices, not limits: many sponsors place participants anywhere in the United States. The USCIS hub identifies employers by the last four digits of their tax identification, so check similar names.

Postings say what lists cannot

History shows what an employer did. A posting gives its current words for one role. As of 8 October, of the 83,858 postings read, 76,101 (about 91%) state no stance. They did not say no, so they could sponsor, and they have not said yes either. Only 730, from 18 employers, say they sponsor.

Visa Jobs lets members search US postings by role, pay and state, hide the ones that say they will not sponsor, and open the employer’s own listing. It costs $8 a month. A stated stance is the employer’s wording, not an assessment of your case.

Use them in this order

  1. Decide which visa you need and read its route.
  2. For a J-1, shortlist sponsors in your category and ask how each works with host companies.
  3. For an H-1B, check the employer’s history in the USCIS and Labor Department data.
  4. Read the posting. Its own wording on sponsorship is the freshest evidence.
